The Shetland Islands

120 km from the Antarctic Peninsula, the Shetland Islands archipelago, of volcanic origin, consists of 11 larger islands and numerous small islands covered in 80% ice.

A wide variety of flora and fauna inhabit the different islands, such as species of mosses, lichens and flowering grasses, as well as Gentoo Penguins, Chinstrap Penguins, Adélie Penguins, Macaroni Penguins, Southern Giant Petrels, Checkerboard Petrels, Kelp Guls, Common and Polar Skuas, Antarctic Terns, Weddell Seals, Leopard Seals, Elephants and Sea Lions, etc.

Antarctic Peninsula

The Antarctic Peninsula is part of a mountain range about 800 km long that rises above sea level in the Scotia Arc, a product of the collision of the tectonic plate that bears the same name and the Antarctic plate. Here, the highest peaks can reach 2,800 meters above sea level.

The Peninsula offers a dramatic setting dominated by towering peaks and gigantic glaciers, as well as a wide variety of wildlife including Gentoo Penguins, Adélie Penguins, Emperor Penguins, Weddell Seals, Crabeater Seals and Leopard Seals.
